The Actor
Acting begins with observation. Before an actor speaks as a character, he must notice how people walk, pause, conceal, laugh, avoid, remember and react.
The camera is not easily persuaded by artificial emotion. It notices the smallest hesitation, the movement of an eye and the silence between two words. Acting therefore demands both imagination and discipline. One must surrender to the character while remaining alert to the demands of the scene.
My experience in Malayalam television, including my association with the serial Patharamattu by Shyju Sukesh telecast on Asianet spanning over a 1000 episodes, has reinforced the importance of continuity, teamwork and emotional truth. A long-running serial is not created by one person. It is built by writers, directors, technicians, co-actors, editors and countless people working behind the frame.
Acting has also reminded me that every character deserves dignity. Even when a role is flawed, difficult or contradictory, the actor must search for the human reason beneath the behaviour.
The most rewarding moment is not merely being seen. It is making the audience feel that, for a brief moment, the character truly lived.
Starting from Akkarapachcha (Sapathni) by Sreekumaran Thambi, Alippazham by Saji Surendran, I have been able to portray characters in over 26 serials till date, From Radio Jockey by Rajasenan to Mayan by Jithin Jose, I have been able to portray characters in over 26 movies till date in Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu.
